Lymphedema is swelling in the tissues caused by faulty drainage/system blockage in the lymphatic system, a network of tissues that is part of the immune and circulatory systems.

Primary lymphedema is caused by alterations (mutations) in genes responsible for the development of the lymphatic system.  Secondary lymphedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system which can happen for several reasons:

  • Cancer surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Infections
  • Inflammation
  • Venous disease
  • Obesity
  • Immobility
  • Trauma/injury
  • Surgery

A variety of illnesses and conditions can cause lymphedema, a condition that can result in:

  • Swelling of part or all of an arm, leg or torso
  • A feeling of heaviness or tightness
  • Restricted mobility in an affected limb

There are several treatment and therapy options available for lymphedema including:
