The Director's Welcome

Dr. Henry Lau - Program Director

Dear Applicants,

Welcome to the inaugural year of our Transitional Year Residency Program! We are thrilled that you are considering joining our team and embarking on this exciting journey towards becoming a well-rounded and skilled physician.

The coast of South Carolina is a great place to complete your transitional year. Here, you can enjoy the gentle sea breezes and can explore and unwind on the sandy beaches. For outdoor enthusiasts, it is a paradise playground with ample opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing, and more. Championship golf courses, scenic hiking trails, and pristine parks offer endless options for recreation and adventure. Whether you're strolling along the boardwalk, soaking up the sun, or enjoying water sports like surfing and paddleboarding, the beauty of the South Carolina coast is evident.

In addition to the relaxing natural beauty, you will also enjoy a vibrant and exciting community. With many live music and entertainment venues, exceptional dining and shopping, there's always something new to discover. Residents enjoy a diverse array of cultural events and festivals throughout the year, celebrating everything from local cuisine to international traditions.

Utilizing our affiliation with the Medical University of South Carolina, our program is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for your future specialty training or practice.  During your residency training here, you will have the opportunity to rotate through various specialties and can utilize elective time to explore different areas of medicine. Our transitional year program will enable you to develop essential clinical skills, critical thinking abilities, and utilize interdisciplinary collaboration.

The transitional year program is committed to fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment where residents can thrive both personally and professionally. Our faculty members are dedicated educators who are passionate about mentorship and are invested in your success. You will work closely with experienced clinicians who will provide guidance, feedback, and supervision as you navigate through your rotations.

In addition to clinical experiences, our program offers a robust educational curriculum designed to enhance your medical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based practice skills. You will learn through multiple educational methods including didactic lectures, case discussions, grand rounds, journal clubs, and simulation exercises. Whatever specialty you aspire to pursue a career in, our program will provide you with the foundation and support you need to achieve your career objectives.

We invite you to apply to our program to learn more about our unique community and transformative learning environment!

Sincerely,

Henry K. Lau, DO, FAAFP
