Nursing students learn through behind-the-scenes visit at Tidelands Health

Nursing students at area technical colleges got a behind-the-scenes look at the nursing profession during a recent visit to Tidelands Health.

The group of future health care professionals toured Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, observed nurses providing care, learned from a respiratory care practitioner and practiced their CPR skills on manikins.

“There’s no better way to learn what it’s like to be a nurse than to see our skilled and compassionate nurses in action,” said Jennifer Jackson, director of nursing for 2 East at Tidelands Georgetown. “Through the McRoy and Jo Skipper Initiative for Learning and Teaching, our dedicated team at Tidelands Health regularly welcomes students pursuing health care degrees to share our passion, answer their questions and help them learn. We work closely with local colleges and schools to help students get the experience they need to be successful health care providers. We hope many of them will join our team after they complete their education to serve our patients and community by providing skilled and compassionate care.”

The students’ visit is part of the health system’s multi-pronged strategy to develop and recruit the next generation of health care workers. Tidelands Health offers several programs for students, mentorship opportunities and other ways to learn alongside team members and behind the scenes. In February, Tidelands Health served as presenting sponsor and organizer of the health science pathway at the Pathways 2 Possibilities career expo at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. About 8,000 eighth graders from 10 South Carolina counties attended, including students from Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties.

Tidelands Health is actively recruiting nurses and other health care professionals to join its growing patient care team. Learn more about available positions and complete an application at tidelandshealth.org/careers.
