Tidelands Health provides free sports physicals to more than 900 students
More than 900 Georgetown County students recently got a jumpstart on their sports participation for next school year thanks to a longstanding program by Tidelands Health.
Teams of the health system’s physicians, orthopedic specialists, physical therapists and other care providers traveled to four county high schools in the past month to conduct free, onsite physicals for students. The school gyms transformed into a hub for students to receive their required sports physicals prior to the 2023-24 school year. Through a series of stations, care providers checked the students’ overall health – blood pressure, movement, height, weight and more.
More than 930 Georgetown County School District students received free sports physicals during the visits to Carvers Bay, Andrews, Georgetown and Waccamaw high schools.
“Every spring, our team looks forward to visiting the schools to provide convenient, streamlined sports physicals to enable students to embrace an active lifestyle by participating in school sports,” said Dr. William Greer, an orthopedics and sports medicine specialist at Tidelands Health. “Many of our Tidelands Health team members have gotten to know the students through the years and enjoy catching up with the students during the sports physicals and providing our services to keep them active and healthy.”
The program began in 2005 as a small effort at a Tidelands Health physician’s office and has expanded over the years to onsite physicals at the four high schools. Organized by the Tidelands Health Sports Medicine Institute, the free sports physicals at the schools aim to encourage physical activity among students and break down a potential barrier to sports participation.
The sports physical program is just one example of the longstanding partnership between the region’s largest health care provider and the Georgetown County School District. Tidelands Health providers also are on the sidelines of football games and special events.
Tidelands Health also is the official health care provider of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the official health system of the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers.
