Blood drive scheduled in Myrtle Beach amid national blood shortage

Tidelands Health is partnering with the American Red Cross to sponsor a blood drive amid a national blood shortage.

The American Red Cross said last week it is experiencing a blood shortage as its national supply has fallen by more than 25 percent since July 1.

During the summer, blood supplies tend to run low as many regular donors are on vacation and school-based blood drives are paused. Last month, more than 100 blood drives across the country were also impacted by the summer heat, adding to the usual seasonal obstacles and resulting in a shortfall of blood donations, the American Red Cross says.

Maintaining a steady supply of blood is crucial for patients undergoing surgeries, cancer therapies and those suffering from chronic diseases or severe injuries. With each blood donation lasting only 42 days, there is a constant need for community members to donate regularly to help blood banks remain stocked.

Those who donate blood Aug. 23 or at another American Red Cross blood drive through Aug. 31 will get a $20 Amazon.com gift card by email.

“We join with the American Red Cross in encouraging those who are able to donate at the upcoming blood drive,” said Ashley Capps, vice president of operations and chief nursing officer at Tidelands Health. “Your donation could end up helping save a life.”
