Blood drives scheduled ahead of summer season demand

Tidelands Health is partnering with the American Red Cross to offer two blood drives to help meet the need for donations ahead of the summer season.

hands holding a red heartDonors have two convenient opportunities in Myrtle Beach and Georgetown to donate in June as summer heats up:

  • Friday, June 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, 606 Black River Road
  • Friday, June 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tidelands Health Medical Park at The Market Common, 2200 Crow Lane in Myrtle Beach

Schedule an appointment at redcrossblood.org.

The American Red Cross typically sees blood supplies dwindle during the summer months as many regular donors take vacations and blood drives at schools are paused for the season. In addition, people travel and spend more time outdoors, leading to accidents and medical procedures that require transfusions.

Blood supplies are essential for patients undergoing certain surgical procedures or cancer treatments, as well as battling chronic illnesses or traumatic injuries. A single blood donation has a shelf life of only 42 days, so donations from community members are continuously needed to keep supplies replenished.

Blood donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Be sure to bring your driver’s license, donor card or other valid identification. Appointments will take priority, but walk-ins are welcome.
