St. James Middle School club donates baby supplies to Tidelands Health Pediatrics

Students at St. James Middle School are doing their part to help parents of young children in our community.

About 20 Junior Beta Club members at St. James Middle School pose in the school's hallway with baby supplies they donated to Tidelands Health Pediatrics. The school’s Junior Beta Club donated baby supplies to Tidelands Health Pediatrics to distribute to parents of patients who need a helping hand. Through collection drives, social media posts and friendly competition among the classes, the club collected more than 635 items, including boxes of diapers, wipes, food, bottles, new clothes and blankets and toys.

“It’s important. If you are fortunate enough to be able to do it, you should participate,” eighth-grader Emily Parsons said as she helped sort the mounds of items this week. “It makes me feel good knowing what you do is going for a good purpose.”

After collecting items for two weeks, the club sorted, counted and neatly packed them for Tidelands Health Pediatrics.

St. James Middle School students load boxes of baby supplies into an SUV. The school's Junior Beta Club donated the items to Tidelands Health Pediatrics.“Doesn’t this make your heart feel good? Makes my heart feel good,” Sandy Cooley, a teacher and club co-sponsor, said as she packed the last box of donations into an already stuffed SUV.

This is the third year the club has held the collection drive of baby supplies, inspired by their teacher and club lead sponsor, Angela Tester, who wanted to organize an effort to honor mothers while teaching valuable lessons to the club’s students.

“They really showed some school spirit,” Tester said. “I can’t believe how giving they were.”

The donated items will be distributed to Tidelands Health Pediatrics patients with a demonstrated need.

“These supplies will go directly into the hands of the parents who need them,” said Jessi DuBose, director of women and children’s services at Tidelands Health. “We are so grateful to the students and everyone who donated to their effort to help parents in our community.”
