Tidelands Health leading health sciences pathway at unique career expo in Myrtle Beach

Tidelands Health is helping eighth graders across the region explore health care careers at a unique career expo kicking off today in Myrtle Beach.

Students practice CPR techniques with guidance from Tidelands Health professionals. The health system is the presenting sponsor and organizer of the health sciences pathway at the Pathways 2 Possibilities career expo today and Thursday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Thousands of eighth graders from 10 counties – including Horry and Georgetown counties – are expected to attend. Presented by the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation, Pathways 2 Possibilities offers more than a dozen career pathways for students to explore. Students are expected to start arriving around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

As leader of the health sciences pathway, Tidelands Health is coordinating efforts to help students learn about the range of career opportunities in the health care field. Students who stop by the health care area at the expo will be able to learn about nearly two dozen health care specialties, including infection control, orthopedics and surgical services.

Students are encouraged to try activities offered in the health care pathway, including viewing X-rays, learning CPR, practicing physical therapy techniques and more.

“Future doctors, nurses, lab technicians, physical therapists and others might look back years from now at a moment during Pathways 2 Possibilities when they found their passion for a health care career,” said Caitlyn Krask, manager of student and volunteer programs at Tidelands Health. “Our goal is to provide engaging activities for these students that help introduce the range of possibilities available in the growing health care field.”

The health system’s role at Pathways 2 Possibilities is part of an ongoing strategy to recruit and develop the next generation of health care workers. Through the McRoy and Jo Skipper Initiative for Learning and Teaching, Tidelands Health offers numerous student programs, mentorship opportunities and other ways to learn alongside team members and behind the scenes.
