Tidelands Health offering free, onsite student sports physicals at Georgetown County high schools

Tidelands Health is once again making it convenient for Georgetown County student athletes to get required annual sports physicals.

Avery, a student in Georgetown County schools, sits in a folding chair in the school gym as a Tidelands Health physical therapist kneels while checking the student's leg movements.Physicians, orthopedic specialists, physical therapists and other Tidelands Health care providers will travel to the county’s four high schools during May to provide free, on-site physicals for students. The sports physicals are required for students participating in school sports during the 2024-25 school year.

Through a series of stations, students will be evaluated by multiple care team members who will check the students’ overall health, including blood pressure, movement, height, weight, vision and more.

“Students will receive a thorough check from our Tidelands Health care providers to help encourage safe and healthy participation in school sports,” said Dr. William Greer, an orthopedics and sports medicine specialist at Tidelands Health. “Our care providers enjoy seeing the students – many of whom we’ve gotten to know through the years – and provide our services during these convenient on-site clinics.”

Tidelands Health will offer the free sports physicals at Andrews High School on May 2, Carvers Bay High School on May 9, Georgetown High School on May 16 and Waccamaw High School on May 23. The program is offered to students in middle school and high school in the Georgetown County School District. Students do not need to schedule an appointment.

Last year, more than 930 Georgetown County School District students received sports physicals during the on-site visits by Tidelands Health.

The sports physical program began in 2005 as a small effort at a Tidelands Health physician’s office and has expanded over the years to on-site physicals at the county’s four high schools. Organized by the Tidelands Health Sports Medicine Institute, the free sports physicals at the schools aim to encourage physical activity among students and break down a potential barrier to sports participation.

In addition to providing the free physicals, Tidelands Health providers are on the sidelines of Georgetown County School District football games and special events.

Tidelands Health is also the official health care provider of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the official health system of the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers.
